Accessing Your Inner Wisdom, Part 2

Learn how to harness the power of reflection and dig deep to discover your happy path.

In my previous blog post, I explained that the first steps to finding a career with heart are to acknowledge that change is possible and to determine what it is that you truly want to do.

The next step is to align your materials with your evolving personal brand.

Ensure that the authentic story you tell in your written materials (your resume, LinkedIn profile, etc.) and your oral communication (interviewing, networking) reflects what you’ve learned about yourself and what you want professionally.

An edited version of your past work experience can play up the most powerful components of your work history in a narrative that exemplifies why you are innately qualified for the next step you are craving now. I call this your Compelling Story.

Finally, you must take massive action.

Experimentation without commitment is the name of the game. Connecting with other people in roles, organizations, and fields that interest you is the single best way to move into a new career. So few positions are posted these days—the way to find new roles is by relationship building through networking and informational interviews.

It’s great practice to talk to people about your new career and ask them to connect you to others you can learn from. Plus, it’s excellent training for actual job interviews.

Through all of the steps above, it is imperative to surround yourself with people and resources that support your dream to better your life through a truly fulfilling career. This can be accomplished by having an accountability buddy, a supportive mentor, and/or a professional coach .

Often, the hardest part of a change like this is creating the proper structure within which to make the transition. Structure is something a good career coach can provide to allow you to relax into the process, knowing that an experienced guide is holding you and your goals in the realm of possibility.

Let me share a personal story with you: Eleven years ago, I was struggling in an unfulfilling job. I made a career change from IT product management to professional coaching. It was a long journey, but so worthwhile. It infinitely changed my life for the better.

I worked with a career coach who helped me explore my deepest values, dreams, and hopes for my life. With that grounding, I was then able to engage in research, networking, and soul searching to evaluate and select my current field. Through this process, I used both my head and my heart as my coach helped me explore different opportunities. With each step further into new field, from training to ultimately opening and building my own practice, I fell deeper in love with the profession.

I knew I had made a sound decision, one that resonated with my values and desires for my life.

If, after reading this, you feel a fire kindling inside you—a burst of inspiration and desire to find your happy path—please don’t ignore it. Listen to your inner voice and strive for the best quality of life that you can achieve. It might be a struggle at first, but I promise you: it’s so worth the work. I’m living proof.
