10 Steps to Move Past Self-Imposed Limitations (Part I)

Are you up against something that makes you feel stuck and like you will never be able to conquer it? I recently wrote an article about a stuck place I moved through, and it seems to have struck a chord with many. I thought I would reverse-engineer how I moved past the challenge and share the steps, so you can consider applying the strategies that resonate with you. 1. Move your body. We all know we should be exercising on a regular basis; if you are already into a regular routine, good for you. If you are…

3 Ways to Recharge This Summer

I’ve been spending too much time on Facebook lately, peering at the curated versions of peoples’ lives. I find myself feeling a bit less than whenever I do it, but I find it hard to look away from the shiny versions of other peoples’ lives. It is so easy to view other’s worlds and think that their grass is greener. If you could just be like them, have their life, their friends, their children, their home, all would be well. It would not be. Perhaps because of the line of work I’m in, I gain access to…

Casual Fridays: Taking Care of Physical Health

One of the best things about working for myself is being able to make all the rules. Running a business is challenging, but there are some definite perks. Like casual Fridays. As I write this, I am sitting in my lovely office in a t-shirt, yoga pants, and sneakers. This is only the second or third time I have done this. I typically dress up every day for the office and for my clients, thinking it’s important that I look the part. I feel more official and good about myself when I’m wearing my professional clothes. Plus,…

5 Tips for Sane and Happy Holidays

Just thinking about the holiday season can raise stress levels, with all the shopping, decorating, parties, traveling, and family activities. Feeling worn out from all the demands? Here are my top 5 tips to keep your sanity and enjoy the season: Get out of your head and into your body. Nothing relieves stress like a good sweat. Feeling overwhelmed? Put on those sneakers and go for a brisk run. Getting daily physical activity is so important, not just to burn those extra Christmas cookie calories, but to give you a mental boost. Dance, walk your dog—anything, just…

When in Doubt, Shimmy

If you’ve been with me for a while, you know that I love to dance. In fact, I plan my calendar around my beloved Dance Boogie class.   Recently we’ve been working on “All That Jazz,” a number from the Broadway hit Chicago. Not my favorite hip hop fare, but there is a place for all styles of dance in this class and in my heart.   Anywho, our instructor has been working us through the fairly complicated routine for the past few weeks. “Come on babe, why don’t we paint the town…and all that jazz!”   It’s…

By The Skin of my Teeth

Yesterday I barely made it to Zumba class. As the 5:30pm class time approached I kept glancing at the clock. At 4:45pm I told myself that I needed to get my workout clothes on. I didn’t move. At 5:00pm, I reminded myself to get up and get dressed because I needed to leave in 15 minutes. Instead, I continued to be rooted in my chair, trying to figure out how to get some video files off my camera and onto the computer. Not an urgent task but one I wanted to finish in order to feel a…

How Dancing With the Stars Feeds my Soul

Time sure seems to be in short supply these days. The hours whiz by and my To Do list is always longer than what I can possibly get done in any given day (or week). It’s a bit demoralizing, to tell you the truth. I have a tendency to measure my sense of accomplishment based on how productive I am. Can you relate? Somewhere along the way I developed the (faulty) belief that my value increases with the amount of stuff I get done. My inner self knows that it’s not true, and I am working on…

I Didn’t Make Drill Team in High School

It was pretty traumatic. I danced my heart out at the audition and thought sure I would make it. Drill Team was cool and I really wanted to be part of it. I was so disappointed not to make the cut.   I still love to dance, so I’m thrilled to have discovered my new favorite class at the gym, Dance Boogie.   It’s awesome because: It’s exercise but doesn’t feel like it. The hour is up before I know it! The teacher pairs her instruction with fantastic music (Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas). We learn dance…
