Adopt a Family This Christmas

We are excited to announce that our drive is underway and adoptions for our 2017 drive are now open! Click here to make your selection. Now in our fifth year, this family-friendly holiday drive helps clothe the women and children residents of Alameda’s Midway Shelter, their safe house, and the San Leandro Shelter with new, cozy jammies, socks, and underthings to open on Christmas Day. This year’s party culminating the drive will be held on Wednesday, December 6th, 2017 in the early evening. For the past four years coordinating this event, my heart has been filled with gratitude for the  generosity givers…

Tap Into Your Creativity in The New Year–We Need You!

At this time of great uncertainty, I often feel at a loss as a citizen, entrepreneur, and parent. I find myself wondering how best to walk through my days to make my existence worthwhile on this earth and be of service to others. I often feel sorely lacking in my compass, not sure how best to proceed, almost like I’m driving down a road with no map while feeling my way around curves and corners. Many times I spin off the road, into the gravel, not sure how best to proceed. And then I gather my bearings,…

Making a Difference, One Family at a Time

The annual Jammie Drive we run touches two groups of people: those who receive the gifts and those who give them. The drive benefits residents of three East Bay Area shelters—havens for victims of domestic violence and homelessness. We provide cozy pajamas, socks and underthings, basics we take for granted, to these folks in need. We’ve run this program for four years now; it’s a big hit with local families and individuals looking to give back to their community. Here are comments from some of our donors about why they return year after year to participate: “This drive…

A Wish For The New Year: Honoring Myself

I am going to get a bit personal today, to take a chance to express my internal longings for the double-purpose of saying out loud what I long for and also helping you connect with what you personally crave for your life, too. Here goes. I feel like a brilliant diamond that is covered up, not quite visible or glowing the way it has the potential to be. Mired down in the muck of feeling scared and limited in my skin, I find I’m not sure how to be who I really am. How to be myself…

Christmas: The Light and Dark

I am sitting in the quiet of Christmas Eve morning, rain spattering on the roof, the dog sighing in his sleep, watching the lights blinking on the Christmas tree as I drink my tea and wipe sleep from my eyes. I’m feeling content. I love this moment of the day. My intention for the new year is to take advantage of this delicious time of day, on a regular basis, to write and express myself, to get more ideas out of my head, onto paper and ultimately out into the world. I hope that, wherever you find…

3rd Annual Jammie Drive Was a Huge Success!

It took me several days to come down from the joy of this year’s Jammie Drive benefiting Midway Shelter… The drive benefits two local domestic violence and homeless shelters and the accompanying safe house run by Building Futures for Women and Children. With the incredible support of local parents and children, this year we (again) supported 115 shelter residents with gifts of cozy pajamas, socks, underthings, and other warm clothes, plus a generous financial donation of $1,100 to allow the Building Futures team to purchase additional supplies they need for the residents.

Success Story: Holiday Jammie Drive

The residents of Midway Shelter are going to have a cozy holiday. At the charity jammie drive wrap-up party this past Tuesday night–which was an absolute blast—we donated pajamas and financial gifts to be delivered to 115 women and children residents of Midway Shelter, Midway’s safe house, and the San Leandro shelter. In addition to pajamas, robes, sweat suits, socks, and other comfy basics, we also presented the cumulative financial donations of over $1,100. This is double what we were able to donate last year! Midway Shelter’s Development Coordinator Lorie Curtis was extremely grateful. Our donations will make a big difference…

Getting into the Christmas Spirit: Jammie Party Recap

Several weeks ago, I looked at my young children (ages 4 and 5) and realized that I wanted to give them the experience of what the holidays are all about: giving to others. I remember when I was young, my family gave gifts and a bag of groceries to a family we never met so that they could have a nice Christmas. I also remember selecting an ornament from a Christmas tree in the lobby of one of my employers that identified a 7-year-old girl who really wanted a doll for Christmas. Those are some of the…

5 Tips for Sane and Happy Holidays

Just thinking about the holiday season can raise stress levels, with all the shopping, decorating, parties, traveling, and family activities. Feeling worn out from all the demands? Here are my top 5 tips to keep your sanity and enjoy the season: Get out of your head and into your body. Nothing relieves stress like a good sweat. Feeling overwhelmed? Put on those sneakers and go for a brisk run. Getting daily physical activity is so important, not just to burn those extra Christmas cookie calories, but to give you a mental boost. Dance, walk your dog—anything, just…

Why Giving Matters

As I sit here on Black Friday deluged with ads, I feel a bit sad for our world. Not because I don’t like to shop; rather, it’s because the race towards Christmas, now that Thanksgiving is done, is so focused on acquiring material goods. Don’t get me wrong; I’ve always liked the joy that finding just the right present for another person brings, and I have certainly enjoyed being on the receiving end of gift giving too. I have a confession–most of the time I don’t watch the news. I just can’t take it, to be honest….
